Boat Day

Today we started our day with a very delicious breakfast consisting of One-Eyed Jacks, Randy’s special breakfast potatoes, fresh fruit, and coffee.  We then had to leave the lodge earlier than usual to make it to the boat dock by 8:45 AM.  When we walked on the broken and dangerous dock, we realized that the tide was so low.  It was so low that the docked boats were literally sitting on sand with no water underneath.  As we were walking on this extremely rickety bridge,Captain Morgan, the best captain in all of Costa Rica, was informing us students that in the morning the tide is so low, but by the time we return to this amazing area the tide will be so high we will not be able to walk on the sand.
Not too long after we got on the boat we headed for the green screen looking lands across the beautiful blue-green ocean.  Everyone was so anxious the have fun under the sun, although we were pasteurized about every 5 minutes to reapply our lotion!  We were all having a splashful time in the burring and raging sun!  There were more than about 300 dolphins at one time right in front of our bulging eyes.  How majestic!  As we watched the dolphins glide through glistening water, we took photos of the great mountainous views we could see from the boat.  It was then time to gear up for our adventure in the water.  We needed snorkel masks and life vests.  Some of us were nervous about getting stung by the stray tentacles of jellyfish, but we all sucked it up and jumped in the water.  Annie felt a little motion sickness, so she stayed on the boat.  Jumping into the warm, blueish-green water, was an experience that everyone enjoyed.  We put our mouthpiece in, we saw schools of fish, eels, and coral.  It was a little foggy because last night we experienced a torrential down pour that fogged up the clear blue ocean.  Many of us also experienced the feeling of getting stung by tentacles.  The feeling was not too bad, only slight sting for a bit and the feeling goes away.  When we were finished with snorkeling, we jumped in the boat to eat our PB & J lunches.  Our boat then went into Mangrove Trees that were growing in salt water with their very long roots.  We finally got back to the dock where we hoped into the van and flew back to Peurto Jimemez. We went to cool off with delicious refrescos before we shopped until we dropped.  Everyone was having a ball!  We finally had a fabulous dinner of pizza on the beach before we hit the lights for bed.  Miss everyone at home! lots of love!

  1. Thanks for the pictures. It's good to know that Ms. Kelly is actually on the trip. How about a chaperone group picture!

  2. I'm glad you all are having fun. Truly adventures in Paradise!! Daniel, it's too quiet at home without you. But at least I'm getting my taxes done. Ugh, we have more snow & ice to look forward to. So when you return bring plenty of sunshine with you.

  3. Meme. We lost tonight but it was a good game. I didn't want to worry you by mentioning that MM was hurt in yesterday's game after being pulled down backwards to the ground. That was a rough game, Jordan even was stomped on. But her trainer put MM back together again for the game today and she was 2nd top Denison scorer. Now she can take time off to heal all her injured body parts. Don't feel bad about missing the game, you can watch the video!

We just got home beating out the storm.

Sunday night Idina Menzel sings 'Let it Go' at the Oscars. We also expect a winter storm Sunday night. I don't think that's a coincidence!

  4. Looks like the fun continues in Costa Rica. I second the group chaperone photo - Mrs. Marx must take every photo that gets posted! Other than being jealous of your weather, I have to say all of the food shots have mounds of fresh fruit that look amazing! Hope you all are enjoying the meals, makes me hungry reading about them.

Claudia and dad, Friday night games were all successful but Saturday proved otherwise. So needless to say our Sunday schedule just cleared. But we have Emma's bday party and will see Craig again tomorrow (who is anxious to get his hands on the GoPro). Just returned from Evita which was interesting and entertaining. Elliot and Jack banking on a snow day Monday, so the moms agreed to a sleepover :) Love and miss you both.

Happy trails to all on your next adventure.

  5. Hola chicas from the 2013 girl’s trip! Believe it or not, we are all gathered right now (except one person) at panera for a reunion of our Costa Rica trip from last year. This all started when a couple of us (Anna and Erin) expressed their sadness and jealousy of your trip in unhealthy ways. We decided that the closest we can get to being where you guys currently are is by all meeting! Anyway, we realize that you guys are more than halfway through your trip, but we also know that you could make some use of our following tips:
    1) Always leave you cabina open so that you can fully experience the wildlife
    2) Don’t wear sunscreen – peeling is in rn
    3) Don’t wear your harness zip lining because using your hands is more fun
    4) Miss Kelly will understand if the “monkeys” throw your homework in the cool pool
    5) Feed monkeys because they are always super nice
    6) Put you phone alarm on sci-fi and see if your cabina mates jump out of their bed because they think a weird animal is in their cabina
    7) Dance on the ping pong table and see what happens
    8) Don’t try to run away from waves at Iguana Lodge
    9) Machetes are for wimps, crack the coconut open with your head
    10) Don’t kick the frogs out of the showers – they are good company
    11) Jumping in the cool pool counts as a shower
    12) Don’t give Randy a hermit crap – he will probably put it in his mouth
    13) WACTH OUT FOR THE WAKA (ask Randy)
    14) Miss Kelly LOVES loud singing on the bus
    15) The most important (and deep) tip, make sure you cherish every moment because before you know it, you will be eating your feelings away in a year from now wishing you were back in paradise.
We hope you all are having an amazing trip. It is truly the experience of a lifetime, and we can’t wait to hear all about it!!!

  6. Alejandra Britt and Curly Murray!!

It is great to hear from you two!! Great use of adjectives in your narrative.... It sounds like you guys are having a great time!! We all miss you very much. Alex, Drew was very disappointed that he missed your Facetime on Friday--he was torn between answering your call during class and getting a detention or missing your call and, more importantly, losing out on all of that knowledge he would have missed while talking with you :)

We are glad to hear that everyone is having fun, and we very much look forward to seeing your pictures and reading your posts! Being able to do all of these things is certainly an experience of a lifetime. We were so jealous reading about your tour of the cholocate farm that we've been eating Hershey bars to comfort us! The fresh fruit and scenery is simply amazing. Enjoy every minute and soak up all of these wonderful experiences. Try new things and have fun with each other. We miss you all very much and look forward to many more pictures and posts while you are there.

Love, (Alex's) Mom and Dad, Drew, Elle, Jake, and Cooper

  7. The weather from "Boat Day" looks like it was spectacular. Pinch yourself every time you begin to take Costa Rican experience for granted because it will be over before you know it and it will become a touch point for the rest of your life.

Beyond the incredible sites, the images from Costa Rica make it evident that Mrs. Marx is pursuing her passion as a photographer. National Geographic here she comes!

  8. It's about time we heard from you two! now curran get in some pictures! Adonis' son is a cutie!

So jealous of the great weather. Your boy, Dee played a great game yesterday in their win over ninth ranked Creighton! And UC lost! Hope that made you day!

  9. As I write this there is ice starting to coat the trees and cars. Everything is taking on that magical look of a winters dream......or maybe not. Personally Costa Rica with all of your stories and pictures sounds much better than what we have back here in Ohio. We will make sure to keep some of the snow back here for you to enjoy when you come back later this week. Until then, keep enjoying the weather, sun, and fun.

Brittany, don't forget to get something for Katherine, she is so excited to see what you will bring her.

    Love Mom, Dad and Katherine!

  10. Boat day looked like a blast! And the food from this trip looks amazing! As some one said, how about a picture of the chaperones?

Clint - on your behalf, I watched the UC game yesterday. Very disappointing - here's a recap from ESPN - "UConn didn't score a basket in the last 7 1/2 minutes against No. 11 Cincinnati on Saturday, and still won the game." Bigger news was Cronin erupting with a ref (he didn't get a technical).

Merritt - keep having fun and keep applying that sun screen - you look like you're having a wonderful time!

    Love,
    Mom

  12. Hi Kate:
Only in the 30's this morning in Portland, OR. We are jealous of your temporary home in the tropics. Enjoy your experience in Costa Rica and have fun. Looking forward to seeing you and everyone else this summer.

  13. Well, looks like the Walter kids will get to stay up and watch the Oscars tonight. Our own person Frozen has rained upon Cincinnati. And Daddy can cry when a Disney cartoon beats out U2 in the Best Original Song category. Let It Go.....

  14. What a great day! Looks like everyone was having a good time, except maybe Annie. I guess we can rule out marine biology as a future career. I know exactly how you felt, Annie. Your dad took me whale watching in Alaska and I spent the whole day trying to keep my lunch down. It's miserable. Sorry that you missed the snorkeling. Have fun and don't miss out on anything else! Thanks to all for the pictures and updates.

  17. Dear Dad and Annaliese,

I just got back from the Little Clinic at Krogers, but I don't have STREP. At least they gave me some steroids - and Mom said that I'm going to stay home from school tomorrow - even if it isn't cancelled!
Looks like you are having a lot of fun on your Costa Rican vacation. I can't believe that there were 300 dolphins swimming by - at one time! I hope that someone got a photo of it!
Dad - we're looking forward to seeing you before you have to fly "somewhere" again!

    Love,
    Adaliene
PS - I'm having fun wearing all your clothes (just kidding - they're too big)!

  18. Dear 8th Grade Travelers,
Thanks for today's updates. I'm looking forward to a "male" version of the activities - hopefully on a future blog . Daniel and Sam - we need a male perspective. I'm also looking forward to hearing a little something about the chaperones. I'm envisioning them all: relaxing in hammocks, sipping on tropical drinks, fanning themselves with palm leaves - while the kids are galavanting across the Costa Rican "countryside"!
I even decided to "friend" Mrs. Marx on Facebook - to see if she posted any pics. Now - I have 3 Friends on FACEBOOK! Don't take it the wrong way Laura . . .I'm not much of a Facebook gal.
Anyway, while everyone is "crying" snowstorm, back here in Cincinnati, I drove my mom (you ALL know Mimi) to the airport for her first "flight - ALONE". She had to transfer planes in Atlanta. OMG - do you think she'll make it to Florida??? I swear to goodness - she may end up in Costa Rica with all of you! God bless you - if she does :-)
Seriously, I hope that you are all not only enjoying every moment, but "taking in" every detail to remember once you get back home. I have no doubt that you will always remember this trip as a truly AMAZING life experience!

    Warmly and with Well Wishes,
    Angela Andsager
PS - Just got the call from Mimi - she made it to Ft. Walton Beach - You're safe!
